Description
A Dan Female Figure (Lu Me) Ivory Coast/Liberia, c. early 20th century Most likely a portrait commissioned to honor a wife or accomplished Dan woman (locally called Lu Me). Carved in the style of the workshop of the famous Dan artist Zlan of Belewale, Liberia. She stands with feet apart on muscular legs, of particular interest are the enlarged calves, more typical of early 20th century Dan brass figures. Her columnar torso is incised in elaborate scarification patterns, as are her breasts and chest. Her eyes are closed and her lips slightly parted. Her plaited and braided bi-lobed coiffure is set back high on her forehead. The statue has a deep patina from native use, encrusted black in areas, high points rubbed and polished, especially her umbilicus, nipples and mouth. On a wood base in the manner of Inagaki. In excellent condition, appropriate for age, origin, medium, and use. Minor chip back of left foot, small chip on left ear, tiny abrasions on nostrils and raised vertical line on forehead.
