Markus Hansiz (1683–1766), a Jesuit historian, was also known as Marko Hanzic in Slovene. A Carinthian Slovene family gave birth to Hansiz in Volkermarkt, at the Duchy of Carinthia. At the age of fifteen, he joined the Jesus Society in the nearby town of Eberndorf. After completing his studies, he was appointed a priest in 1708 and was appointed a professor of humanities at Vienna. He was a philosophy professor in Graz from 1713 to 1717, when he gave up teaching to focus solely on historical research. With the help of the learned librarian Bernardo Gentilotti, he was inspired to create a thorough "Germania Sacra" by his fascination with the Anglia Sacra by Henry Wharton, the Gallia Christiana by Sainte-Marthe, Ughelli's Italia Sacra, and other works of a similar nature. In order to accomplish this, he looked through a number of libraries and archives. He then published Germaniae Sacrae tomus primus: Metropolis Laureacensis cum episcopatu Pataviensi chronologice proposita (Augsburg, 1727) and an Archiepiscopatus Salisburgensis chronologice propositus (Vienna, 1729) which are histories of the Church of Lorch and the Sees of Passau and Salzburg.
