Description
"Preamble & Resolutions Offered by Capt. John C. Calhoun to the Central Democratic Club of Pickens County". Details six points that seem mostly innocuous but mask his Confederate sentiments. Five of the six Resolutions focus mainly on keeping the "club" organized to control county and state elections. Number three clearly states the reason they must maintain or gain control stating "Negros can never rule white people and come what may we stand firm united and bide our time.". John Caldwell Calhoun (1782 - 1850) served as the 7th vice president of the United States of America, South Carolina Senator, as a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina's 6th district, Secretary of State, and Secretary of War. Marked "A Copy" on the back lower right margin. Page is written front and back, approx. 7-1/8" x 9". This item can be shipped in-house.
Condition
Page is written front and back with some typical wear considering age, use, and materials. Folded into quarters horizontally and one time vertically, some weakness to the paper along some of the folds. Overall discoloration or toning, some corrections in ink, and some irregularities along the edges, primarily where the folds land. See images for more details on condition.
