First part 612 pp., second part 251 pp., third part 224 pp.
With two folded maps of the Garden of Eden and the Route of the
Exodus, one full-page map of the eastern Mediterranean and
adjacent countries, woodcut title, numerous woodcut
illustrations by Tobias Stimmer, including more than 20
hand-colored or partly colored, numerous woodcut initials,
including some hand-colored, and woodcut vignettes.
Original blind stamped pigskin.
Binding worn good interior. One page with missing corner. A few old manuscript notes.
Title page with repaired lower margin.
Size 6 by 9" (H. 22,5, B. 14,5 cm.)
After the first large-format edition of the Bible (Neue Künstliche
Figuren, Basel, Guarin, 1576), the Schaffhausen artist Tobias
Stimmer (1539 - 1584) produced a pictorial Bible in small format
with the publisher Thomas Guarin in 1578. This Vulgate is
characterised by the artistic understanding of the late
Renaissance and shows the full talent of the Upper Rhine artist.
