Description
19th century. Carved wood figure of a female saint, 15” height with especially characterful face with down cast inset glass eyes. Her facial features and hair rendered in fine sensitive detail. Blue pigmented gown and otherwise bare feet in sandals. On integral wood base. The hands missing as often found as they were made separately and a finger or small piece remove when Sunday mass was observed without the benefit of a priest as was often necessary. See The Catalog of the California Hall, L.A. County Museum, #90 for two further examples dated to 1825.
