Description
mid 19th century, 28 x 29 cm, China
The small square silk embroidery is a rank badge for a Chinese Mandarin of the 5th rank. It consists of two halves, thus it was originally sewn to the front of the robe. In the centre of the grey field, a silver pheasant embroidered entirely of silver thread, with a golden beak and golden legs, is standing on a rock that rises up out of the waves at the lower edge of the field filled with large clouds. It looks up to the left to a red sun disc, which is an imperial symbol.
Signs of age and wear, one small missing section at the right edge. Mounted and framed under glass.
