Large Medallion Suzani
Large Medallion Suzani
Item Details
Description
ca. 1800 or earlier, 260 x 164, Central Asia, South West Uzbekistan

When Michael Franses published his monograph on large medallion suzanis, "The Great Embroideries of Bukhara” in 2000, 54 examples were known to him. Since then, another 15 large medallion suzanis have come to light, bringing the total number today to 69.

The suzanis of this special group belong to the most fascinating, gorgeous silk embroideries from Uzbekistan. Since the monograph was published, there is no longer any uncertainty about their origin. We now know that most examples come from Bokhara or the immediate vicinity. It is their unmistakable, expressive style that makes them so impressive, together with their brilliant colours and the massive impact of the designs. They differ significantly in terms of composition, designs, dimensions and structures so that Franses has classified them into several groups.

The monograph has no precisely matching comparative examples to the large medallion suzani published here for the first time. It can be attributed to group G due to the circular central spoked medallion that resembles a huge rotating fire wheel, and the wide white border featuring 20 blossoms, with a strong vine of bands resembling salamanders winding around it. The suzani consists of four panels. The inner field is completely embroidered so that the white ground is not visible at all. Four large blossoms seen either in top view or side view face each other in a diagonal constellation in the corners of the field. The golden spirals in the field and in the border are characteristic features for these embroideries from Bokhara.

Very good condition, no fabric backing.
