NOTES / REFERENCES: Charles Frederick Surendorf (1906-1979) Born in Richmond, Indiana. Graduated from Ohio State University, then studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and Art Students League in New York City. He moved Oakland, California in 1935 and studied at Mills College. In 1946 he moved to Columbia in the Sierra foothills where he became the director of the Mother Lode Art School. Surendorf is known for his prints and paintings that depict historic California themes and the country life of the old California gold mining territories, executed in an American regionalist style.

Charles Frederick Surendorf was a member of: California Society of Etchers; San Francisco Art Association; Mother Lode Art Association; Bay Region Art Association in Oakland. He exhibited at the: Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1936; San Francisco Museum of Art in 1936 - 1946; California Society of Etchers, 1938 - 1954; Golden Gate International Exposition, 1939; De Young Museum, 1946; Art Institue of Chicago; National Academy of Design. His works are in the collections of: Monterey Peninsula Museum; San Francisco Museum of Art; Mills College (Oakland); Library of Congress; Wichita Art Museum.
