Description

[H. M. S. VICTORY]. [NELSON, Lord Horatio (1758-1805), subject]. Commemorative Lord Nelson Bust Carved from the Timbers of the H. M. S. Victory. [Ca. 1840]. This bust of the great Admiral was made from discarded timber from Nelson’s flagship, H. M. S. Victory. Keepsakes such as this were greatly prized during the 19th century and were made from discarded timbers removed during periodic maintenance when old timber was replaced. The bust features an engraved plaque which reads “THIS OAK WAS TAKEN FROM THE ORIGINAL FRAMES OF H. M. S. VICTORY”. The bust is approximately 6 ?” high. Rare and desirable.
