A PAIR OF LARGE WHITE-GLAZED STANDING COCKERELS 19th/20th century The large birds modelled standing looking to the left and right astride brown-washed pierced rockwork, the bodies elaborately incised with plumage under the clear white glaze. 39cm (15 1/4in) high. Chait Galleries, New York A European private collection An auspicious bird in China, cockerels are associated with good luck as well as faithfulness and perseverance. The rooster was also one of the most highly-favoured models in Chinese export porcelain; see W.R.Sargent, The Copeland Collection, pp. 141-5.
