Item Details
Description

Originally listed at $400

Southeast Asia, Philippines, probably Itneg (Tinguian) or Kalinga, Pre-Colonial period, ca. 13th to 15th century CE. A pair of large pottery vessels, hand built and fired to deep red and umber hues. The largest features a rounded but stable base with a carinated shoulder adorned with an applied edge incised by chevron markings. The jar has a bulbous body, rounded yet stable base, and an outward flared rim. The neck and shoulder are incised with linear crosshatching. The pottery of the Philippines from this time is relatively simple with decorations consisting of impressed stamps of linear and geometric forms that were reminiscent of the tattoos inked into the skin of both men and women from this region. These vessels were intended for water storage or cooking, and earthenware deepened the flavors of the food. Size (large bowl): 11" Diameter x 5.25" H (27.9 cm x 13.3 cm); (jar): 7" Diameter x 6" H (17.8 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010
