Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Thailand or Cambodia, ca. late 19th to 20th century CE. This is a tranquil cast brass depiction of the Buddha seated upon a double tiered lotus petal pedestal. The Buddha is in half lotus position with his hands forming the dhyana meditation mudra atop his lap. Dressed in simple robes, he has reached enlightenment and has cast away all material wealth, his ears are elongated from wearing heavy jewelry, but the stretched lobes also symbolize his ability to hear the cries of suffering. His eyes are cast downwards under gently arched brows and his visage consists of a broad nose, full lips, rounded chin, and ringed creases of skin around his neck. Upon his head are swirling nodules of curls that are gathered into a topknot to represent an ushnisha at the center, rising upwards to the sun. The surface of this lovely statue is covered in a dark green patina from age and weathering. Size: 6.75" L x 4.75" W x 8.75" H (17.1 cm x 12.1 cm x 22.2 cm)
