***Sylvia Beach (1887-1962) was an American who established the Shakespeare and Company English-language bookshop on the Left Bank in Paris. It became the centre of the Paris literary scene in the 1920s, entertaining and encouraging aspiring authors such as the expatriates James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway and Ezra Pound as well as the French writers Paul Valéry and André Gide. In 1922, she was launched into controversy with her publication of Joyce's Ulysses under the Shakespeare and Company imprint; she continued to publish his works until he defected to another publisher, leaving her struggling with remaining debts..
