Captain James L. Fisk was a tough frontiersman and capable leader who was in charge of four expeditions into Montana. This image documents Fisk's Second Expedition, of 1866, when he led a party of miners and settlers to Helena. Almost certainly, the photograph was produced by William Henry Illingworth, the expedition photographer. The photographs taken on the Fisk Expedition were never widely distributed, and are quite rare.
