Description
Notorious US Navy Captain Robert C. Klosterman's VFA-106 Gladiator Flight Suit in good condition with some fading. This unique piece belonged to the controversial and infamous Captain Robert C. Klosterman, who started out as a young naval gunship helicopter pilot back from combat in Vietnam after 440 combat missions and married Rebecca Coffield, a single mother. Klosterman, a Naval Academy graduate in 1969, later flew A-7s, commanded several squadrons, in 1986 he flew and led the Navy combat mission over Libya to strike key military sites belonging to leader Muammar al-Qadafi and led sailors in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Robert Klosterman proved a combat veteran, successful leader of men and a swaggering fighter pilot. Earlier, he was CO of a logistics ship, XO of the USS Enterprise and the first commanding officer of the nuclear carrier, USS John C. Stennis. On track to make Admiral, he later left the Navy after accusing his wife of undermining his career. "I have had to shield my professional career from Becky's selfish and careless actions," he wrote in court papers, added that his wife had become "entrenched in the Tailhook scandal" against his admonishments and kept him from making Admiral. What followed was a long drawn-out separation that included allegations of violent threats, infidelity and recriminations of an unfulfilled Navy career. It ended just before a final hearing on their divorce, when police found two bodies inside a home in Virginia Beach. Both Rebecca and Robert Klosterman were dead, victim and suspect in a murder-suicide. The story has been the subject of books and TV movies...and artifacts of their lives surprisingly prove VERY collectable.
