Hazel Tyrrell (1894-1967) - Canton, NY c.1950's - 8.75" - Dubbed "The Pierrepont Birdwoman" Hazels carvings are highly regarded folk art. In the last 22 years of her life she spent dedicated to her carving and ornithology. It's noted that when a bird would die on a nearby property, she would collect the specimen as a study to better perfect her carvings. The life-size robin has nice paint and carved feather details on the back. The surface has mellowed nicely with time. The wire legs are attached to a birch branch base. Underneath is signed with the species name, much of the writing is illegible. - - Condition: Original with light wear, including rubs to the bill and slight chipping to the tail and thighs.
